What Steps Do I take for planning my wedding flowers?
The planning process starts with an appointment for a consultation. It is not unusual for you to plan to secure your florist 6 months to a year in advance. We often will book a year out – So call soon ! During the consultation we will spend 60 – 90 minutes at our studio reviewing portfolios, and discussing every part of the wedding process. We will be as specific as we can , knowing that wedding planning is a fluid process and things will change as the “big day” approaches. At the end of the meeting I will let you know about how soon I will have an estimate/proposal for you. After reviewing the proposal, and you know that you would like to hire Oneka Floral and Design, we will have you sign a contract for the day with a deposit and continue with finalizing the details over coming months. As your wedding date comes closer, we will probably have additional meetings in person or by email or phone , site visits and sample arrangements if needed.

What should I look for when hiring a floral designer?
When you are interviewing – ask these questions:
How many weddings like mine do they do each year? Make sure you are hiring a wedding specialist. Not every florist caters to brides. You want to make sure that the company you hire specializes in weddings so that they are familiar with all the intricacies and details they must cover from timing of deliveries to specific requirements at venues and religious sites.
What services are provided? There is more to wedding flowers than the flowers ! A couple deserves service. You may want all or some of the following services: Personal consultations, written proposals, sample arrangements, delivery and set up to each venue, pinning boutonnieres and corsages and moving flowers from the ceremony to the reception.

Make sure you hire a company that will provide all that you will want.
Will I work with one person from start to finish? Make sure the person you meet with initially is the person who will oversee all the details of your wedding. You want continuity. You want to develop a relationship with one person so that you can be sure that they are responsible for all the fine details you discussed with them. This way nothing gets lost in translation.


What should I plan to spend on wedding flowers?
This is a personal decision.

Since every wedding is custom designed for the individual couple – there is no definitive answer. We can , however, give you some general guidelines. For most of our clients, flowers are a top priority at their wedding. If you are planning an average size wedding look to spend approximately $15 to $25 per guest at your wedding (inclusive of the tax and service/delivery charges). Of course it is possible to spend more or less. If you have a particularly large wedding party or require a lot of décor for the ceremony or have an exceptionally small or large number of guests, this formula may not be valid for your event.

In all reality – the prices for flowers and shipping has really gone up in the last 5 years. An average simple wedding with very little at the reception 5 years ago used to be about $1200. That same wedding is now $2500 for florals alone - for simple. A lot will depend on the types of flowers used and their design and what time of year it is. The books will tell you to plan on 10 to 20% of your budget – it is still pretty close of an estimate – keep in mind part of that estimate is the service and the labor to complete the event.
